Design intentional training plans by using activities that engage both existing stakeholders and new talent. This session will explore three important training moments for new staff:

  • something "grounding" that taps into librarianship's goals

  • something "inclusive" that bridges personal experiences and community needs

  • something "forward focused" that illuminates new employees' career paths at your library.

If you are considering refreshing or building a training program for new employees, please join this lively presentation and discussion.

About the Presenters:

Alex Olsen is the Staff Engagement Specialist for Gwinnett County Public Library. She began her career as a Circulation Clerk at the Orange County Library System before moving to Georgia and discovering a passion for staff training. She has leveraged both her library experience and her minor in Secondary Education to further develop Gwinnett County Public Library's New Hire Training program. Through her instruction, new employees gain important knowledge of library services and technology proficiency. She also instructs existing staff to grow their skills for serving Gwinnett's rapidly changing community.

Casey Wallace is the Staff Engagement Manager for Gwinnett County Public Library and coordinates system training initiatives like New Hire Training Week. As Staff Engagement Manager, she helps new staff become experts in the library's products and services. She has been involved with many projects during her 16 years with the library. Assisting with everything from helping individual customers, to planning programs, visiting schools, and writing grants, just to name a few. All of these projects have helped shape Gwinnett County Public Library's services to fit the needs of a growing and diverse urban community.
