Learn how to make your library programs accessible to every patron.

People with disabilities deserve to be visible and participating members of all aspects of community life, including and especially public libraries. Programming plays a crucial role in cultivating connections, increasing understanding, and supporting lifelong learning across abilities. In this course, you will learn how to design public library programs that support, include, represent, and elevate library users with disabilities across the lifespan. Acquire strategies for creating user-centered programming experiences and gather ideas for making all library programs more welcoming to neurodivergent and disabled users.

Learning Objectives:

  • Create and deploy community assessment to solicit feedback about library programming and the experiences of people with disabilities.
  • Understand and implement the OF/BY/FOR/ALL methodology to community engagement and library program development.
  • Support users with physical disabilities.
  • Create outcome-driven and community responsive library programs for children, teens, and adults with disabilities.
  • Identify and implement strategies to make all library programs more welcoming for library users with disabilities.
  • Articulate and apply best practices for developing positive, transparent, and trusting relationships with community partners and disability organizations.
