June 5 - July 2, 2023 | Four-week course

In this four-week course, we will discuss emotional intelligence (EI) – the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships effectively within your library. Theories about developing emotionally intelligent staff through training, mentoring, and succession planning are discussed specifically in relation to librarianship. The theories and discussed philosophies and practices of EI will encompass and blend new concepts into existing and widely valued library literature with theorists from within the business sector.

Topics include staff selection, developing skills and competencies, benefits and rewards, and managing change. In the staff selection segment, we will discuss the hiring process, from writing the job description to posting, interviewing, and hiring. As manager with proficiency in EI, you will learn to develop both soft and technical skills in your employees, introducing theory and practicalities of defining and developing core competencies in your staff. Because the process of creating an emotionally intelligent organization seems daunting, we will outline what benefits EI brings so that we have end goals in mind. Finally, the challenges of change management are discussed.
