Leadership for ALL

Your next library leaders are right under your nose, but they may not be professional librarians or ever plan to get their MLS. So, how do you develop the future leaders and decision makers for your organization? How will your organization deal with succession planning? How do you keep paraprofessional staff and new librarians motivated to stay and grow with your organization? In this webinar, libraries will learn how to think outside of the box with professional development and training in order to retain great staff members.

Hall County (GA) Library System (HCLS) developed the L.E.A.D (Lead, Excel, and Develop) year-long training program that has had twenty successful graduates the last few years. The candidates for this program were paraprofessionals with no college education, staff in roles outside of library and information science, and new MLS graduates who showed leadership abilities outside of a management position. Over the course of a year, the class of eight to ten staff members were taught a variety of topics, from human resources laws, basics in leadership, to crisis management communication; with all the sessions led by experts in their community or by fellow librarians. Staff in the program learned all that is not taught in library school and the practical day-to-day management of public libraries and services. Thanks to this program, HCLS has a ”ready-to-go“ staff who can fill crucial management and leadership roles regardless of their education background.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the staffing and institutional knowledge gaps in their organization, as well as new staff policies and trainings that need to be implemented in their organization;
  • Plan, budget, raise funds, and execute their own internal professional development program;
  • Communicate with their funders, library board, and community the importance and need of leadership development for staff who do not have a MLS; and
  • Have a clear guide in how to measure success of their internal training program and how to offer these opportunities year round.

This webinar is intended for public library directors, administrators, staff liaisons, HR professionals, trustees, and management.

Panelists

Adrianne Junius (she/her) is the deputy director of the Hall County Library System. She has been with HCLS for sixteen years, and served as youth services director for the system for over a decade before becoming deputy director in 2019. Before coming to Hall County, she has worked for Clayton County Public Library System in Jonesboro, GA, and did a yearlong professional internship with Baltimore County Library System in Baltimore, MD. Adrianne is a graduate of the University of Georgia and received her Masters of Library Science degree from the University of Maryland. In 2015, she completed Georgia’s Public library INstitute for New And Creative Leadership Education (PINNACLE) program and has served is various leadership and committee roles for library organizations across the state. Her passion in libraries is bringing innovative and immersive experiences for all who use the library.

Lisa MacKinney (she/her) has been the library director of Hall County Library System for ten years, previously serving as assistant director at HCLS from 2005 to 2015. A native of Summerville, GA, Lisa received her Bachelor’s degree from Piedmont College and her Masters of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alabama. She has served as branch manager for the Chattooga County Library System in Summerville, GA; head of public services for the Lake Blackshear Regional Library System in Americus, GA; and assistant director of the Bartow County Library System in Cartersville, GA.

Lisa is a graduate of the inaugural class of PINNACLE, a competitive year-long library leadership programand has been certified to conduct long-range planning for libraries through the Public Library Association. She has served as secretary/treasurer of North Georgia Associated Libraries and has twice served as chair of the Greater Hall Chamber Human Resource Council. She currently serves as vice-chair of the Georgia Library Public Information Network for Electronic Services (PINES) Executive Committee and as the vice-chair of the Georgia Council of Public Libraries. In 2020, she was appointed by Governor Brian Kemp to the Georgia State Board for the Certification of Librarians.
