Harwood Virtual Public Innovators Lab: Getting Started, running every Thursday in April from 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. PT, plus a required orientation on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
We are inviting pairs of two library workers from 10 California library systems (20 participants total) to apply for this opportunity. Participants should plan to attend all sessions and actively engage in the learning experience.
About the Lab (from Harwood)
Learn how to get started using the transformative Harwood approach and embrace the mindset and practice of Turning Outward. This road-tested, time-tested approach has spread to all 50 U.S. states and 40 countries worldwide.
Over five weeks, guided by a team of Certified Harwood Coaches, participants will learn how to:
- Catalyze a chain reaction of actions in their community
- Discover what truly matters to people
- Find out where their community is starting
- Show up more intentionally in their work and lives
This interactive and dynamic Virtual Lab is designed for public innovators who are ready to engage. Attendees must complete pre-session assignments and participate with openness and a can-do mindset.
What You’ll Learn
- Session 1 – Why Turn Outward: Explore the mindset and behaviors needed to make more intentional choices and create authentic hope in your community.
- Session 2 – How Change Happens: Learn how to catalyze and grow a chain reaction of community action.
- Session 3 – What Matters to People: Discover how shared aspirations and concerns can reframe public discussions and align action.
- Session 4 – Know Where Your Community Is Starting: Learn how to accurately diagnose your community’s starting point to calibrate meaningful action.
- Session 5 – How You Show Up: Identify what it takes to show up differently for yourself and others in your community.

Program Expectations
To be in the lab is to be an engaged learner and active contributor. Participants are expected to:
- Show up on time, prepared, and ready to engage
- Complete readings, videos, and assignments between sessions
- Ask questions and seek clarity
- Reflect on and apply what they are learning during and after the lab
