This session will explore the role of assessment in supporting early literacy, including the new statewide requirement to screen all K–2 students for risk of reading difficulties. Presenters will break down the different types of assessments, how they’re used, and how they fit within a comprehensive literacy plan.

The webinar will feature:

National Assessment Experts

  • Dr. Young-Suk Kim (UC Irvine; Chair, CA Reading Difficulties Risk Screener Panel)
  • Matt Brunetti (WestEd; Early childhood assessment and psychometric specialist)
  • Dr. Adrea Truckenmiller (Michigan State University; Literacy screening & special education researcher)

School District Leaders Highlighting Successful Practices

  • Dr. Karla Estrada, Deputy Superintendent, Los Angeles Unified School District
  • Dr. Dennis Wiechmann, Superintendent, and Tim Lopez, Associate Superintendent, Sanger Unified School District

This is a great chance to deepen our collective understanding of literacy screening, early reading challenges, and how schools are strengthening assessment systems across the state.
