Three-session webinar series | Oct 9, Oct 23, and Nov 6, 2024 | 1:00 - 2:30 pm

This training provides managers a shared understanding of the language and structure of library equity work and supports a priority mission of the California State Library - "Equity-centered work to help ensure all communities have the library services and programs they need to thrive."  Participants will complete asynchronous content with the option of participation in an online discussion board. After completion of each module, they will also participate in 90-minute interactive facilitated discussions. These virtual discussions will include trust building among the participants and facilitator, group sharing via reflective prompts, small groups or “break outs” and reflective activities as appropriate.

NOTE: The content in this training has generously been shared by Multnomah County Library, a leader in equity and inclusion in libraries

All sessions take place from 1:00 - 2:30 pm on the designated days.

  • October 9th - Inclusively Leading with Race

  • October 23rd - Understanding Systems of Race and Racism and Understanding and Confronting Anti-Blackness

  • November 6th - Power, Privilege and Bias and Facilitating Conversation

  • Optional one-on-one follow up conversations: Participants may elect for a follow up session of 30-60 minutes with the facilitator to discuss progress, pain points, answer questions and discuss specific goals the participant may have around racial equity and inclusion.

Facilitator Bio: Akiliah Manuel (pronounced uh-key-luh) has been facilitating groups discussions around complex subjects in various sectors for 29 years. She applies the practice of deep listening and creates a culture of honor, where participants experience being seen and heard. Akiliah believes that people have wisdom within them and that unity and diversity of perspectives results in expansion of the whole. As a multicultural woman of color, she brings the unique perspectives of often polarized views and facilitates in a manner where all voices can muddle through and work out their own beliefs and clarify their frustrations, fears and values safely. A former public library director, she had the privilege of practicing the tough work of Equity for 10 years. She is the Principal at The Door Coaching and helps people be their whole self at work including navigating difficult workplace dynamics. She also serves as a coach for the Catalyst Leadership Development Team.
