Time Travel Club: Bring Children’s History Programming to your Library

Are you in search of elementary-age programming that includes elements of STEAM, culture, and social studies—and is fun for everyone? Give “Time Travel Club” a try and bring history alive!

Join children’s librarian Elizabeth Stinnette for a discussion of history programming for kids. Discover how to make history fun with engaging, hands-on activities that both you and they will enjoy. We’ll also discuss strategies for community partnerships, integrating diverse cultures, and adapting for various sizes of staff and budget. Additionally, check out the handout for more resources, including a program plan, book lists, and activity ideas. History doesn’t belong in the past—bring it to the present with a little bit of time travel!

As a result of this program, attendees will learn:

• Why history programming is as important as STEAM programming
• How to come up with history program themes and activities
• How to enlist community members and teen volunteers as programming allies
• How to highlight under-represented cultures with respect
• How to make children’s history programming work for your branch

Elizabeth Stinnette Biography:

Elizabeth Stinnette is a children's librarian at Purcellville Library, a branch of the Loudoun County Public Library system in Virginia. Elizabeth specializes in programming for elementary-age students, including Time Travel Club--as a history-lover herself, she loves bringing the past alive for kids! Elizabeth earned her MLS at Catholic University of America and previously worked at a variety of LCPL branches, including a brand-new urban branch, a small rural branch, and an outreach van.
